A speaking engagement is a great way to build your reputation as a coach and thought leader. You can showcase your talents, prove your expertise and increase your name brand recognition. Once you have identified your presentation topics, you can create multiple presentations to fill any lengths of time someone may request.
But before you say YES, consider these things:
The Audience
The first thing to consider is the audience. Will your ideal client be there? Keep in mind that you are speaking in order to build your practice. It will be a waste of your time and energy unless the majority of attendees are good connections that can potentially bring you new business. Also, will you have access to attendees before and after you speak?

Before you say yes, make sure your ideal client is in the audience.
Relevant Topics Only
What topic have you been invited to speak about? Does it align with what you offer in a coaching package or service? It’s important that your presentation be relevant to the audience and give them an experience of you and your expertise. You need to be able to create a connection between the services you offer and your speech in order to plant the seeds of awareness.
Set the Stage
Before you say yes, make sure that the environment you will be speaking is good for you. Will you need a microphone or lapel mic? Do you need a podium? Are you using slides and need a big screen, and will you be able to control the presentation yourself? All of the details about the setting will need to be known ahead making a commitment.
Follow-Up
One of the most important things to know before you say yes to a speaking event, is whether or not you will be able to follow-up personally with attendees. Will your host provide a list with email addresses? Will they provide a table or area for you to have more personal conversations away from the main crowd? Are you able to share marketing material with those who attend? Your planning for follow-up after the event will significantly increase your opportunities to fill your calendar with new business.

Speaking engagements can help you fill your calendar with new business.
In closing, speaking engagements offer great opportunities to build your brand awareness, network with new people, and showcase your expertise. With discernment and planning, you can make public speaking work for you!
