Finding new coaching clients is a challenge for most coaches. The well runs dry after they tap into family and friends. They struggle to keep a full pipeline of potential customers.
New coaching clients can be found in a variety of places. Your challenge is to identify a few groups, organizations, events and activities where you will find them and where they can find YOU!
Get Clear
Learn as much as you can about your ideal client. Where do they live, work and play? Where do they shop, go to church or or school? Are they married with kids? Gather information about their education and income range and you will have more insight into who they are and where you might encounter them.

Get clear on your Ideal Client and you will discover where to find them.
Informal
It’s possible to interact with your ideal client as you go about your day-to-day life. Consider where you go throughout your daily activities and if you are crossing their path already. Your bank or gym, the school where your children (and theirs) attend, your HOA or City Council meeting – these are just a few places where you might find new clients or those who can refer you. Eyes open wherever you are!
Formal
There are many formal networking groups where you can build solid referral relationships. Some groups are free, while others are pay-to-play and can be costly. A local chapter of a business networking group, like BNI or Gold Star Referrals might be options. Your city Chamber of Commerce might be a good place to start, too. Formal networking groups are often more intimate and allow your team partners to understand more about your coaching practice to generate better referrals.
Service Clubs and Non-Profits
You may also find your ideal client through community service clubs and non-profits. Check into organizations like Kiwanis International, Rotary or Lion’s Club. Joining a well established group can put you immediately into activity that can help you build local relationships. Non-Profit organizations are always looking for help.
Where do your interests intersect with your ideal client and where can you serve? Over time, these connections can be pure gold for referrals. Plan to dig in and stay a year or two.
Online
Online networking is now a popular way to meet new people and build your visibility. Some organizations are now scheduling online networking events, allowing participants to share about their services. In a recent informal survey we did, we learned that 67% of coaches are now finding most of their new clients online. Participating in chat rooms or groups where your ideal client can be found is a great way to find new business. Following influencers in your clients’ industries can help you discover even more online places to investigate.

Many coaches are finding new clients online.
Find a Match
New clients can come from a combination of formal and informal networking. The secret is find a match between what you are comfortable doing and where your ideal prospects can be found.
Our challenge to you is to choose two new networking ideas and pursue them within the next 30 days. Be selective and attend only those events and activities where you are likely to get the best results.

[…] As a coach, it’s natural to want to continually improve your skills and knowledge in order to better serve your clients. One way to do this is by getting another certification or training in a particular area. However, while investing in your professional development is important, there are also other areas where coaches can effectively allocate their resources, such as marketing. This can be especially important for coaches who are just starting out or who are looking to expand their client base. […]
So true. The well does run dry after coaches get clients from their immediate friends and family.
I like the online method for speed of reach.
Thanks!!
