Text Messaging with your Coaching Clients

Text messaging between coach and client is here to stay! And there are some great advantages to using text when communicating with your coaching clients. Here are a few:

Easy Access

It’s simple to use text messaging to communicate. Almost everyone has a cell phone and already knows how to text. Texting can be done any time and from anywhere. Your clients can text you questions or concerns and you can answer when you are able.

Make sure to set up expectations around your response time. Also, you might want to mute incoming messages between certain hours in order to limit disruptions.

It’s Fast

Speed is your friend when it comes to being responsive to your clients. Text messaging is usually faster than email. It’s also more efficient than a phone call that could go beyond a quick answer.

Creating boundaries around what is and what is not appropriate for texting is important. Urgent or time-sensitive matters can get handled quickly through text. You will want a different process for emergencies and have that well defined.

Paper Trail

Having a written record of your text conversations can be helpful and text messaging creates a “paper trail.” You will be able to review these conversations later, if necessary.

You can also send a receive files, provided your phone and theirs has that capability. Just make sure your client’s phone can handle the data transfer.

Affordable

In most cases, there is no additional charge for you or your coaching clients for text messaging. It’s already built in it’s just a matter of using it.

However, there are texting platforms that can allow you to do things like group messaging, web sign-up forms, surveys, along with other automated tools to help you make the most out of text messaging. Here is an article that explores features of some of these systems that you may find helpful.

You can offer support and encouragement between sessions through text.

Closer Connection

One of the greatest benefits of text messaging is staying closely connected to your clients between sessions. You are able to offer greater support, but respond in your own timing. You can create mid-week checkins or even send questions that keep your coaching clients moving forward.

With planning and very clear guidelines, text messaging can be an excellent addition to your coaching practice to stay connected and keep your clients on track!
